Our legacy & Future
In 1981, Natalie Knight founded the Natalie Knight Gallery in Johannesburg with the focus on international art. Her gallery later became a pioneering platform for showcasing artists from across South Africa – especially Black artists whose work was often overlooked or suppressed under apartheid. Through solo or group exhibitions, the gallery helped launch and sustain numerous careers.
Natalie is best known for her curatorial and scholarly work in the Ndebele and Tsonga/Shangaan art, and her exhibitions brought these traditions into dialogue with the global Museum art world, including the ROM, A.I.M, Smithsonian, British Museum, Boston museum and many more.
The Knight/ Priebatch research is recognised internationally, with materials archived at the Smithsonian’s Eliot Elisofon Photography Archive (EEPA) in Washington D.C.
Even in her 80’s, Natalie remains creatively active, Including a 2019 collaboration with architect and millennial creative, Asher Marcus, at “Life on Iris” in Norwood, Johannesburg.
Now The Natalie Knight Art Collection seamlessly merges historical richness with modern significance, ensuring it remains meaningful and appealing to collectors across the Continents and beyond.
