Nils Burwitz was born in Swinemünde (now Świnoujście) in 1940. After wartime displacement and moves across Europe, his family settled in South Africa in 1958. Burwitz studied fine art at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and later broadened his practice through scholarships and study in London, Freiburg and Salzburg. Over decades he produced painting, sculpture and graphic works that combine acute draughtsmanship with powerful social commentary
