For The Appreciation of Art

Ezrom Legae (1938–1999) was a South African sculptor, draughtsman, and painter. He was born in Vrededorp, Johannesburg. Legae studied art at the Polly Street Art Centre. He later trained at the Jubilee Art Centre under Cecil Skotnes and Sydney Kumalo.

Legae became a teacher and co‑director at the Jubilee Art Centre. In 1970 he won a USSALEP scholarship to travel to Europe and the United States. From 1972 to 1974 he directed the art programme at the African Music and Drama Association. For much of his career he lived and worked in Soweto.

Legae is known for art that comments on apartheid and its effects. His works often depict figures, heads, animals, and human experience in expressive form. He worked in bronze, clay, oil, conté, and mixed media. Many of his pieces reflect both African tradition and modernist influence.
