Noria Mabasa (born 1938) is a South African sculptor and potter from the Venda region of Limpopo. She is known for her wood carvings and clay figures that reflect Venda traditions and cultural stories. Mabasa began her art practice without formal training and developed her skills through dreams and local inspiration.
She became the first Venda woman to carve wood in South Africa. Her choice of wood challenged cultural norms that traditionally reserved this medium for male sculptors. Mabasa’s works often explore themes of mythology, spirituality, women’s daily lives, and social challenges.
Mabasa’s art has been shown in exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. She has received major honours, including the Silver Order of the Baobab. She also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg for her creative achievements and cultural impact.
