Esther Mahlangu (born 1935) is a South African artist from Mpumalanga. She is a member of the Southern Ndebele community. Mahlangu first learned mural painting from her mother and grandmother as a child. Her work adapts traditional Ndebele house painting into bold modern artworks.
Mahlangu is known for vivid geometric patterns and bright colours. She paints freehand, often using feathers or simple tools instead of brushes. She was the first woman and the first African artist to paint a BMW Art Car in 1991, bringing Ndebele design into contemporary global art.
Her art has appeared in major international exhibitions. These include the Magiciens de la Terre show in Paris in 1989 and museum exhibitions in the United States and Europe. Mahlangu’s work is in public and private collections around the world.
