Collen Maswanganyi
South African Sculptor | b. 1977
Collen Maswanganyi is a South African sculptor working primarily in wood and paint, whose practice engages legacy, political memory, and contemporary African identity. Born into an artistic lineage as the son of sculptor Johannes Maswanganyi, his work extends — rather than repeats — this inheritance through a restrained, concept-driven approach.
He studied fine art at Technikon Witwatersrand, obtaining a National Diploma in 1999.
Maswanganyi’s sculptures explore the tension between tradition and modernity, often using symbolic fragments such as shoes, fists, and garments in place of literal portraiture. This strategy shifts focus from representation to meaning, inviting reflection rather than nostalgia.
His work is held in private, corporate, museum, and institutional collections. He has exhibited widely in South Africa, including A Measure of Success (ArtSpace Gallery, Rosebank, 2009) and a solo exhibition at the Absa Gallery in 2013. In 2010, he received a Merit Award at the Absa Atelier.
Among his notable works is The Sole/Soul of Madiba, a sculptural meditation on legacy and responsibility that resists monumentality in favour of lived experience.
