Ephraim Ngatane (1938–1971) was one of South Africa’s most celebrated township realist painters, trained at the Polly Street Art Centre under Cecil Skotnes. Known as the “Hogarth of the township,” Ngatane captured daily life in Soweto during the 1950s and 60s — crowded township streets, jazz musicians, sport, and social gatherings — in a distinctive style that moved between documentary realism and abstraction.
