NATALIE KNIGHT ART COLLECTION

For The Appreciation of Art

Wayne Barker (b. 1963, Pretoria) is one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary artists, known for provocative, mixed-media work that challenges the boundaries between painting, collage, and cultural commentary. He studied fine art at Pretoria Technikon and completed his BA at the Michaelis School of Art in Cape Town, later earning a postgraduate degree at the École des Beaux Arts Luminy in Marseille.

In 1989, Barker founded F.I.G. (Famous International Gallery), a groundbreaking space that helped launch the careers of artists who would go on to define South African contemporary art, including William Kentridge, Lisa Brice, and Kendell Geers.

Barker’s work is held in major public and corporate collections, including the South African National Gallery, the Johannesburg Art Museum, and the SASOL, Anglo American, and GENCOR collections. His 2010 retrospective at the Standard Bank Gallery cemented his standing as one of the country’s most significant living artists.

Among his most celebrated works is Hope (1994), a mixed-media collage exhibited in Berlin in 1997, where Nelson Mandela himself signed the piece. Limited edition prints of Hope are available through the Natalie Knight Art Collection.
