Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Douglas Portway was a renowned abstract and figurative artist who spent much of his career in Europe. After early years in Spain, Amsterdam, and St. Ives, Cornwall, he later worked between England and France. His style evolved from expressive abstraction to a deep focus on the human figure, drawing influence from artists like Degas and Bonnard. Portway’s work reflects a lifelong pursuit of inner truth through form, line, and spirit.
