Description
A winning combination, Suzan Woolf and Jane Makhubele
Set against deep black cloth, the footballer appears mid-stride, stitched in striking reds, yellows and greens, with a boldly patterned ball at his feet. Makhubele’s playful inscription “Xavi from Spain, 2010” anchors the work firmly in the year the world’s spotlight fell on South Africa. Her expressive, textural technique celebrates both sport and storytelling, blending contemporary subject matter with the distinctive visual language of the Mapula Embroidery Project.
This artwork was photographed alongside Susan Woolf’s Taxi Hand Signs, an iconic South African visual language, creating a layered connection between everyday urban culture and the global spectacle of 2010.
