Makhubele’s playful inscription “Xavi from Spain, 2010” anchors the work firmly in the year the world’s spotlight fell on South Africa. Her expressive, textural technique celebrates both sport and storytelling, blending contemporary subject matter with the distinctive visual language of the Mapula Embroidery Project.
